UK company Sunak to warn about AI risks ahead of a global summit

Oct 26
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will address the AI Summit, emphasizing that global leaders must address the concerns that artificial intelligence poses and devise strategies to govern emerging technologies while seizing their possibilities.

Excerpts from his office's email suggest that Sunak will make the following claim in his speech on Thursday: "AI will bring new knowledge, new opportunities for economic growth, new advances in human ability, and the chance to solve problems we once thought were beyond our control." "But it also brings with it new fears and dangers."
His administration released three papers outlining how AI may help disseminate deepfakes and misinformation, as well as make cyberattacks and fraud easier, before the address.

In his speech, he states, "My main objective is to allay your fears and give you confidence that we will protect you. At the same time, I want to make sure that you and your children have every chance to benefit from the better future that AI can bring."

Although many experts believe this risk is low, one of the reports—which will be used as a discussion guide at the summit—warns that eventually sophisticated AI systems may become so powerful that they may take over financial or military systems, posing an existential threat to humanity.

According to documents released by the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology, societal unrest and geopolitical instability may result from AI's effects on labor markets and financial market automation.

According to the summit materials, generative AI has the potential to accelerate fraud, impersonation, and child abuse—trends that are expected to arise and peak by 2025.
The paper also issues a warning, stating that the likelihood of malevolent actors abusing technology is increased when most or all users have access to open-source AI models.

Sunak will also emphasize the tremendous prospects presented by artificial intelligence to position the UK as a leader in technology. These opportunities include using AI to boost productivity, advance new fields of study, and expedite medical diagnosis and treatment.
